The 2nd Jennifer Diamond Celebrity Sailboat RegattaThe day couldn't have been better for The Jennifer Diamond Foundation's 2nd annual Celebrity Sailboat Regatta. The sun was shinning brightly; the winds were cooperating and the smell of competition was in the air. The Del Rey Yacht Club, in Marina Del Rey, was the site for the pre-race festivities and the post race Skipper's & Sailor's party. Held on Sunday, July 28th, the sailboats left their slips in the early afternoon and headed out for the starting line. Prior to leaving the slips, each boat was given their official starting time by Roberto Cordero, the Race Committee Chair at the Del Rey Yacht Club.
Comes Down to the Wire
Three classes of sailboats participated in the 2004 regatta: Class A, Class B and Cruising Class. The sailboats are assigned to the classes based on the configuration of each individual boat. Racing keelboats and cruiser keelboats were also invited to participate this year.
From the very beginning, it was apparent that there was not going to be a "run-a-way" winner, and as it turned out, it was only a few seconds that separated the winners in the three different classes. From Class B, the sailboat, "9 Lives", owned by Mike & Denise George and skippered by Denise, took the 1st to Finish honors. The Cruising Class' boat "Can2", owned by Jaime Cantoo, took the 2nd to Finish honors and was just 2 seconds behind "9 Lives". "Star Seal", from Class A and skippered by Lee Lewis, one of the organizers of the race, took 3rd to Finish honors by only one second. The end of the race provided a great deal of excitement, not only for the racers, but also for the people watching from the press and spectator boats. Lewis said, "An event like this a lot of fun for everyone involved. It allows sailors to participate in a sailing competition and have a great time doing so and on the flip side, their contributions help bring more awareness to all of the different forms of cancer that are out there. Educating the public is a major priority for The Jennifer Diamond Foundation."
After the race, the skippers, sailors, spectators and other invited guests feasted on a wide variety of appetizers and again, Anheuser Busch - Beach Cities provided the beverages for the party. Actor Esai Morales (La Bamba, NYPD Blue), not only took part in the sailboat regatta and at times took his turn at the helm of the Star Seal, also assisted Harvey Diamond and Lee Lewis with the awards ceremony.
Sunday, July 17th, 2005 is the date set for what will be the 3rd Jennifer Diamond Celebrity Sailboat Regatta, and the Del Rey Yacht Club will take up the hosting duties once again. Remember to mark your calendar as this is one race you do not want to miss.
While last year's regatta was an overwhelming success, this year's Celebrity Regatta was just as exciting. At the event we honored 4-time world champion and Olympic gold medalist figure skater Scott Hamilton. A recent cancer survivor, Scott has worked tirelessly to promote cancer research and education.
All net proceeds from this event will go directly to cancer research, education and outreach programs as well as support the construction of cancer research libraries throughout Southern California.
The dinner, with silent auction, was held at 5:30 pm on Saturday, July 24th, 2004 at the Marina Beach Marriott Hotel in Marina Del Rey, CA. The Tokens, the 1960's musical group, famous for such hits as Tonight I Fell In Love, Portrait Of My Love as well as the number one smash hit The Lion Sleeps Tonight, provided the musical entertainment for the evening. Additional entertainment was provided Lord Howard Posener, master magician and illusionist, who has entertained presidents and royalty worldwide. Veteran disc jockey, currently with The Boomer - 1450AM radio station in Ventura, CA, and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honoree, Lee Marshall served as Master of Ceremonies.
